How to choose the right degree for you?

Choosing the right degree is an important decision that will determine which direction you take in life. For most students, it is difficult to know where to start when it comes to choosing a degree. To help you with this crucial decision, we’ve broken down some of the things you should consider before enrolling for a degree.

The UK has a rich history of educational excellence. This is due in part to the country’s diverse population and tradition of academic freedom. In fact, the UK was one of the first countries to offer widespread education.

What degree should you do?

For those who’ve already decided they want to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at university, it’s now time to decide on the subject(s) you wish to focus on. If you have a particular career in mind, such as medicine, law, or journalism, finding a suitable course for your chosen subject should be fairly straightforward.

However, if you’re torn between different possibilities, asking yourself the following questions might be a good starting point:

    • Which subjects do you enjoy studying?
    • Are there any subjects particularly good at?
    • Are the subjects you are interested in the ones I’ve studied before?
    • What did you see yourself doing after university? Would your choice of degree affect this?
    • What are the most employable degrees?

What grades do you need to get into university?

Before applying for university, you need to be conscious that institutions will set their very own entry necessities for their degree courses. Those can vary in step with the difficulty, the path, and the university’s specifications.

For instance, to study BA English at University College London (UCL) in 2021/22 you’ll need to achieve AAA at A-level (or AAB to be eligible for a contextual offer as part of the Access UCL scheme). On the other hand, you would require 104 UCAS points (BCC at A-level) for the same course at Birmingham City University.

It’s therefore advisable to look for courses that match your predicted A-level results and always check these against the entry requirements for courses of interest. Generally speaking, universities will expect you to have achieved a certain amount of UCAS Tariff points.

How can you compare university courses?

Firstly, you will need to choose the type, of course, you’d like to study. If you don’t know your options, you should look at the different course types and entry requirements. If you have already decided on the type, of course, you would like to study, here are some things to consider when comparing different courses, and different universities –

    • Check the modules covered in each course and identify which ones are most convenient for your choice and also relevant to your career aspiration.
    • Follow the number of lectures they provide; how long group work will be done in the seminar.
    • What does the assessment at the end of each module look like? Exams, coursework, presentations, or a combination of all three?
    • Must be check who are the tutors and are they experts in areas you want to learn about.
    • When choosing a course, remember that not all courses with the same name are identical in content.

Opportunities

Think about the extras a course may offer. Does it include work experience placements? Guest lectures from industry professionals? What about a sandwich year or studying abroad? All this can add to your university experience and potentially better prepare you for life after your studies.
